CB Model Designs is excited to be a part of the eNostalgia movement.
This model, our rendition of the infamous 1/2 A Ramrod 250, is easy to build and fly, much like the original gas powered model.
The RAMROD 280 was developed from a drawing Ramrod designer Ron St. Jean made for the John Pond plan Service,
identified as the “Ramrod 250”. The date of this drawing is unknown, but the Ramrod came into play as a free flight contender in
the mid-1950’s and on, in various sizes as developed by competition flyers utilizing the Ramrod configuration. The Pond plan shows
a Cox Thermal Hopper .049 engine installed, and was targeted for 1/2A class competitions. Our eNostalgia version has followed the
design intent of this drawing and based on the wing area, puts it in the Class ‘A’ eNostalgia competition bracket based on the
NFFS rulebook sizing parameters for electric powered Nostalgia era designs. The name therefore has been updated to “RAMROD 280” to avoid confusion over wing sizing rules
which limit 1/2A eNostalgia models to 250 square inches or less.
The RAMROD 280 is offered as a Standard Kit, a Deluxe Kit and a short kit.
See below for what is included for each kit.
Design Features of our RAMROD 280 kits: (applicable to all our kit options)
-
A printed detailed CAD based construction drawing shows all the electronic components installed to
help newcomers to eNostalgia understand how the electronic subsystem works.
-
Sliced rib configuration from the original Ramrod design is carried forward in this kit as laser cut components for accuracy
and ease of installation. The top wing ribs are laser cut not sliced as the name implies.
-
A printed Construction Manual which details suggested steps to build the model.
-
All spars, Leading and Trailing edges are laser cut for accuracy. Wing trailing edges include notching for rib ends.
-
Beyond the printed construction manual included in the kit, there are two free PDF downloads available as downloads below.
One is an Electronic Subsystem Overview to help newcomers to electric free flight understand what the various components
are and how they are intended to work in the RAMROD 280.
The other PDF document is for an optional adjustable stab key design that you may want to try on your RAMROD 280.
-
The horizontal stabilizer uses the original symmetrical leading edge entry configuration many have claimed is essential for best glide
transition performance on the Ramrod.
-
Custom designed spherical motor mount assembly makes thrust angle adjustments easy for power trim settings.
This was pioneered on the Joulebox E-36 design and is also utilized for the RAMROD 280.
-
In addition, the RAMROD 280 includes a torque box motor mount assembly to keep the e-version propeller plane in the same
location as the Cox Thermal Hopper engine installation with birdcage mount used for the gas powered version.
This torque box motor assembly is laser cut from plywood and is painted silver in the pictures so as to make it appear
as the original birdcage mount of the Cox Thermal Hopper.
-
Completely enclosed battery and electronic component installation.
A removable hatch assembly holds the battery for installation and removal as well as maintaining the battery position during flight.
-
The RAMROD 280 is designed to accept the Cobra 2203/28 brushless motor that is popular in the E-36 and F-1S electric class models.
Our RAMROD 280 kits also include a plywood motor mount spider to fit the Red Max C20 motor sold by Texas Timers.
This allows the Red Max C20 motor to mount to the RAMROD 280 using the same mounting hole pattern used for the Cobra.
